Makala Jazz Funk Band offers us a new gospel to win believers: "Xake!", a word game between chess check and Afro-American dance shake. The quintet from Zarautz livens up the crowd with 12 songs included in their first full-length album.

The Makala Jazz Funk Band lives up to its name, alternating or pairing both rhythms, with vocals on five of them. In this balance of forces, soul, disco rhythms and a few moments of hip hop add nuances and consolidate a proposal that moves a few steps away from the Latin and boogaloo of previous Makala releases. The band has become blacker in a natural evolution, without forcing the machine, without burning the ships, without aesthetic surprises.

The musicians, Antxon Sarasua (keyboards), Ander Zulaika (drums), Oihan Lopetegi (vocals), Martin Asarián (guitar) and Mikel "Makala" Unzurrunzaga (bass), have already entered that phase in which everything flows; the keyboards set the mood and the direction of each song; the voice adds emotion and delicacy; the guitar chords are a pure tribute to the 60's and 70's; and the rhythmic base, always elegant and detailed, completes a concept that the band has very clear: their own stamp thanks to the careful mix of ingredients. After the two previous EPs, "Orrua" and "Passion Fruit", the Makala Jazz Funk Band follows the path of self-production, under the label Orrua Diskak.

Known DJ Makala's passion for those elusive hits from other decades, the album shows us three versions that are, in fact, exercises in style: "Karam Bani," a 1975 hit by Sidiku Buari, a Ghanaian Afro-funk practitioner who was tanned in the USA; "Wack Wack," a 1966 artifact also instrumental by Ramsey Lewis' rhythm section after signing a pianist to release his jazz-latin-soul from Chicago as The Young-Holt Trio (or also.... Unlimited); and rounding out the masterclass is the infectious "Hector," signed in 1968 by The Village Callers, a sprawling East L. L. orchestra with a few Chicanos. A. orchestra with a few Chicanos in its midst. And then comes another of the quintet's hallmarks: its geographic roots. For this reason, the instrumental pieces of their own composition feature titles in Basque, such as "Orrua", a small rocky bay next to Zumaia, frequented by surfers in the area, "Ihes", that is, escape or flight, and "Baztan", a Navarrese valley at the foot of the Pyrenees, now in fashion thanks to the noir novel, and a territory full of tradition and mysteries already paid tribute to 40 years ago by Mikel Laboa. For the sung songs, we will always have English and even French as in "5 Sense". "Xake!" is therefore not just another album, even if it is also released on vinyl, as well as in digital format. The new MJFB album is an invitation, an open door that takes you to other places of knowledge, while you move your foot or shake your hip. And now, as in the game of chess, you move.

Makala Jazz Funk Band nos ofrece un nuevo evangelio para ganar creyentes: “Xake!”, juego de palabra entre el jaque ajedrecístico y el shake bailongo afroamericano. El quinteto de Zarautz anima el cotarro con 12 canciones incluidas en su primer álbum de larga duración.

La Makala Jazz Funk Band hace honor a su nombre, alternando o emparejando ambos ritmos, con la voz en cinco de ellas. En este equilibrio de fuerzas, el soul, los ritmos de la música disco y unos cuantos momentos de hip hop añaden matices y consolidan una propuesta que se aleja unos cuantos pasos del latin y del boogaloo de anteriores entregas de Makala. La banda se ha hecho más negra en una evolución natural, sin forzar la máquina, sin quemar las naves, sin sobresaltos estéticos.

Los músicos, Antxon Sarasua (teclados), Ander Zulaika (batería), Oihan Lopetegi (voz), Martin Asarián (guitarra) y Mikel “Makala” Unzurrunzaga (bajo), han entrado ya en esa fase en la que todo fluye; los teclados marcan el ambiente y la dirección de cada canción; la voz añade emoción y delicadeza; los acordes de la guitarra son un puro homenaje a los 60 y los 70; y la base rítmica, siempre elegante y detallista, completa un concepto que la banda tiene muy claro: el sello propio gracias a la cuidada mezcla de ingredientes. Tras los dos EPs anteriores, “Orrua” y “Passion Fruit”, la Makala Jazz Funk Band sigue el camino de la autoproducción, bajo la etiqueta Orrua Diskak.

Conocida la pasión de DJ Makala por esos éxitos escurridizos de otras décadas, el álbum nos muestra tres versiones que son, en realidad, ejercicios de estilo: “Karam Bani”, hit de 1975 de Sidiku Buari, un músico de Ghana practicante del afro-funk que se curtió en USA; “Wack Wack”, artefacto de 1966 también instrumental de la sección rítmica de Ramsey Lewis tras fichar a un pianista para dar salida desde Chicago a su jazz-latin-soul como The Young-Holt Trio (o también… Unlimited); y completa la lección magistral el contagioso “Hector”, firmado en 1968 por The Village Callers, una extensa orquesta del este de L.A. con unos cuantos chicanos en su seno. Y llega después otra de las señas de identidad del quinteto: sus raíces geográficas. Por ello, las piezas instrumentales de composición propia muestran títulos en euskera, como “Orrua”, pequeña bahía rocosa junto a Zumaia, frecuentada por los surfers de la zona, “Ihes”, o sea, escapada o fuga, y “Baztan”, valle navarro a los pies de los Pirineos, ahora de moda gracias a la novela negra, y territorio lleno de tradición y misterios ya homenajeado hace 40 años por Mikel Laboa. Para las canciones cantadas, siempre nos quedará el inglés e incluso el francés como ocurre en “5 Sense”. “Xake!” no es, por tanto, un álbum más, aunque se publique también en vinilo, además de en formato digital. El nuevo disco de la MJFB es una invitación, una puerta abierta que te lleva a otros lugares de conocimiento, mientras mueves el pie o agitas la cadera. Y ahora, como en el juego del ajedrez, tú mueves.
